It’s been a crazy NFL preseason with feet issues, helmet issues and holdouts, but it could get crazier as Washington Redskins OT Trent Williams doesn’t want to play for the team anymore and the Houston Texans are listening to trade offers for OLB Jadeveon Clowney as they are both seeking new contracts.
For Williams, the Redskins have informed him that they will not be trading him, but three teams are “actively pursuing”. It hasn’t been confirmed but I would think the Texans would have to be one of the teams to go after Williams, especially since the return for the Redskins could be massive! This is a match made in Heaven as the Texans desperately need to protect DeShaun Watson and, for the Redskins, Clowney is just too good to pass up.
I think we can all agree this isn’t going to be a good season for the Redskins. They are going to struggle with or without Williams and whoever is at QB. The Redskins at the end of the year should hold a top ten pick, so there’s a great chance they can find their new OT. Also, this strengthens the Redskins reasoning on not to start Haskins. The Redskins should just let Haskins watch and learn as he will have the keys to the offense in year two.
The Redskins defense was decent in 2018 as they gave up an average of 22.4 points (15th). Adding Clowney would easily give the Redskins defense a boost and will make the offense a primary focus in the offseason. When Haskins comes in as the 2020 starting QB, it will be great to know he’s got a good defense and an improved offensive line built throughout the offseason (hopefully).
Adding Williams to the Texans is a no brainer as they have to find a way to make this happen. I don’t care if the Texans have to add a pick in this trade or whatever. The Texans are right there with contending for a Super Bowl, but they won’t be taken seriously until Watson gets protection and Williams is the last piece for a real championship run.
