It was a tough season for the 49ers last year as they went 4-12, but it didn’t help that they lost their star QB, Jimmy Garoppolo, to a torn ACL in week three. With C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens replacing Garoppolo, the 49ers played tough as they lost five games by less than 10 points. The offense also adds some weapons for Garoppolo as Jerick McKinnon is coming back from a torn ACL, Tevin Coleman was signed away from the Atlanta Falcons, Deebo Samuel drafted from South Carolina and resigned Matt Breida. Also, no matter who played quarterback, tight end George Kittle, was a monster in the receiving and run blocking game.
The 49ers are looking to compete for a playoff spot as they made some big moves in the offseason. Most of these moves were made on the defensive side as they acquired Dee Ford from the Kansas City Chiefs, acquired Kwon Alexander from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jason Verrett in free agency from the Los Angeles Chargers and Nick Bosa in the 2019 NFL Draft. Ford and Bosa look to make a dominate duo on the line, and Verrett looks to stay healthy after undergoing knee surgery in 2017 and a torn Achilles tendon last year. Another player that is coming back from injury is Jimmie Ward. The former first round NIU product needs to prove his worth as he signed a one-year, $4.5 million contract after coming off a broken forearm.
The 49ers should be better than 4-12 this season, but it all depends on the health of the team. The schedule for the 49ers is solid as they benefit from a third place finish, but the only downfall is that week four bye, especially for a team that scheduled to stay healthy last year. The 49ers reloaded and added talent this offseason, but it won’t be enough to overthrow the Rams, but it might be enough where the 49ers can make some noise to fight for a wildcard spot in a loaded NFC, which will give them a bright future to look forward to.
